MANILA FEVER

Brief Back ground

In late october I learnt about the interesting conference to be held at Manila , Phillipines. The Conference title looked very much close to my interests , experiences and explosures I would always like to extend. I took time but made the application to my satisfaction. After I sent application , I really felt like making a personal mail requesting for a possible participation at the wonderful conference, However I didnot follow my feelings, Instead I waited patiently with a hope that I could make it.

Will I be able to make it or not ?

I Recieved the Confirmation from the host organization of philippines on 30th October inviting me to the conference . Initially I was thrilled with the invitation but looking at the practicality I was little tensed, confused and ofcourse I thought I might not make it to philippines as there were only 10 days left for the conference top start . Added to my conference fever, the Philippines consolate in India was closed for 4 Days and more worst, there were no seats available for Hyderabad to Manila Flights. So I had to wait till 5th November to apply and in mean time I somehow worked out with flight schedules and booked my tickets to manila from chennai, the souther part of India. I can never never forget the four days I spent in waiting . Fours days looked very long and almost I was occupied every second witha question in my mind Will I be able to make it or not ?

I just cant forget the support from the host organization in helping me with every required document i asked for. I remeber occassions where I mailed very frequently and the replies came just in few mins. These were very precious to me at that time . Because I know what might be the consequeses without these spontainiety .

Even besides all this support , the Big question , is still worrieng me. On 7th November the answer followed with VISA being granted . Soon I recieved the information from my travel agent, I started immediatly to chennai and to catch the evening flight to Manila

Manila Welcomes with More Suprises

With a very short transit at Bangkok , thailand, I reached Manila International Airport quite comportable , unaware about the awaiting challenges at Manila Airport . Soon after the immigration check , I realised about the MISSING LUGGUAGE.. I was told that the airport authorities were not able to trace the whereabouts of my lugguage. I was really sick to see the worst development that can happen . Furthermore, the absence of the host organization at the airport to recieve me, has not only made me sick but it further left me with quite many of challenges to answer . soon I was little releaved to find MS. BEATRICE MISA from the host organization to recieve me. latter i learnt that the local voplunteers never knew about my arrival.

The following day (9th Nov) I was left free as the conference is sheduled to start on 11th Nov. I enjoyed the first half of the day shopping around and seeing the best part of Manila. May this is what the airport authority didnt like, I recieved a call during afternoon reporting that my lugguage was found . Soon I went to claim it, atlast sucessfully.

OIYP

OIYP Oxfam International Youth Program 2007 – 2010.

OIYP is the Oxfam International Youth Partnership program. It is made up of 300 young people (called as action partners) aged 18-25 from around the world. The aim of the program is to build the capacity of the Action Partners as facilitators of change. I am currently part of the OIYP 2007 – 2010. This means that through the OIYP Program from 2007 to the year 2010, Oxfam creates opportunities for dialogue, learning and challenging for its partners around the world. Over time, personal change in Action Partners will translate into social, economic and political change within individual communities, in regions and across the globe.
Many Action Partners are working in partnership with their own communities. Many are agitating for change institutionally. All are likely to be challenging existing structures that create inequality in their communities, countries and regions. The majority of young people in the network are working in their own communities in the Global South. OIYP has a focus on young people from marginalized communities but includes diverse young people working in different ways to achieve change.
I made many efforts for getting selected in this wonderful program. I knew OIYP is a wonderful opportunity for me to work with the marginalized communities for integrated sustainable development. As a professional social worker and a grass-root volunteer I had adequate knowledge in understanding the rural communities and I expected OIYP could teach me further the various successful approaches / strategies being implemented across the globe. I believe that this opportunity shall help me work better at the grass-root community level. With this background I applied for OIYP, and from day 1 of the application process I somehow felt that would be part of the new Action Partners team. Later this dream of mine has come true with the official Invitation from
Oxfam to attend Kaleidoscope event, to be held at Sydney, Australia.

KALEIODOSCOPE:
Kaleidoscope is a wonderful event brining 300 Action partners together. This event is organized for 8 days at Kings School, Paramatta, Sydney, AUSTRALIA. The event focused on addressing issues of social injustice and upgrading skills and knowledge to all action partners in the areas of self interest. An event with 300 Action Partners involved in various stages of skill sharing and adopting successful approaches / strategies for the development of communities is highly appreciated. And all through my active participation at kaleidoscope, I learnt several topics / issues of interest.
